Logistics has optimised everything. Except for how it secures heavy goods.

Routes, cycles, stocks, transshipment times to the minute — a whole industry has calculated every movement between the factory and port.

And then someone enters the container with a saw.

Heavy goods are still crated to this day — by hand, in the closed steel container, for precisely one trip. With wellDun, this step can be optimized: a modular system made of heavy-duty corrugated board, that is assembled in the standard container without tools and considers the return journey from the outset.

Traditional crating is a craft:

but the work involved involves hazards.

Crating is carried out with a mitre saw and air nailer gun, in a confined space, and while pressed for time. This process involves noise and cutting hazards, they are not the exception. wellDun modules are placed, not built — this step is omitted completely.

The return journey is the

most expensive part of the process.

Special containers and steel load distributors have to be brought back. From overseas, this costs around 450 euros per container, a calculation that rarely tallies. wellDun therefore includes the return trip as an option, not as a condition.

Everything is returned.

Except the dunnage.

The container comes back, the wagon returns, the semi-trailer returns. The restraints inside the container are broken out and disposed of. In addition, solid wood packaging is subject to ISPM 15 standard compliance: treatment, marking, documentation, in every destination country.

The container stays a completely normal container.

No special means of transport. No carpentry in the factory. Modules made of heavy-duty corrugated board restrain the load — in the maritime container, in the wagon, in the semi-trailer. What currently needs special logistics processes becomes standard.

Why corrugated board withstands 30 tonnes.

Load restraint is based on two principles: friction or geometry. wellDun uses geometry. The modules are positioned so that the corrugations are vertical — in this direction, the corrugated board supports the highest load.

The decisive factor is where the load is applied. The shell is recessed in the middle, because this is where the container floor is the weakest. The question was never whether the module withstands the load — but rather whether it presses through the container.

To this end, up to 180 wet-strength glued layers are tested for eight weeks in the climate chamber at over 90 percent humidity. The stowage concept is validated against the CTU code, UIC regulations and VDI 2700.
